A Boat in the High Sea

It was all a little spark .. that madeA little boy to make a paper boat.

May be he (boy) was completely unaware of its (boat's) destiny. He whispered to the boat- "you should pursue to reach the high sea". A Great dream - a huge uphill task to attain the salvation. Now the boat has a dream, a freshly crafted shape and a dream to chase. It was determined to face any trouble to achieve, what it is made to believe. It grew stronger and stronger as it was leaving the shore. With the breezy wind it got paddles to sail.

Then ..
It faced obstacles- heavy rain- thunder- but not enough to push him back. Now its belief in the little boy is the only driving power behind it, with its paper body wet and sinking. Turbulent tide and strong current took its breath away - with no one to salvage. It got disassembled but still floating. With the hope to reach the high sea- which it has never seen.

After couple of weeks -
it was torn into small pieces or may be tiny ones- ocean started assimilating it. The boat knew that this is the last time it can hope for something - a miracle- it made a wish. It still wished to reach the high sea. Its success would be to reach there even as a tiny paper piece.
After all its dreams were crafted that way!!

I always wanted to come back to the dreams I have seen before. Some of those are good, some of them even better. I have always seen myself in that setup as if it was pre destined, and I am acting as per the script of my dream. For some of those dreams I could, walk extra miles to make it materialized. And some are inseparable from my existence.

Some of those pinch for not standing a chance to get realized. Those were no different from the dreams I cuddle now. They, at least some of them were closest to my heart. Now, it is time - I move on.

I may start dreaming or may not. But for sure my sweet dreams will never be considered by me as nightmares. Just that those did not work out for me. I am puzzled still trying to figure out the way to go.. But I am sure I need to keep moving.

IPL and how other sports can get benifitted

IPL started jazzy this year and before the curtain can fell we got to read a lot about IPL organizers and so on. Certainly a shock when things were going so smooth.

Although I believe ICL (Indian Cricket League) took first step to revolutionize Cricket, I have to admit that IPL took it to a different height. With eyebrows raised towards teams and owners of the franchisees I would have loved to write about it, but I choose not to simply for my ignorance and lack of visibility on the happenings there.

I guess we can readily agree that all franchisee owners and the sports ministry (of course without their permission things would not have been possible) have done a great job to blend professionalism and sports together. A cocktail which have taken a huge number of fans to an instant hang-over!! Well done IPL.

Now the point is what could we have done better? Let me rephrase the same question- What could we have done better for the sports as a whole in India?
Sports like football, hockey even kabaddi were always popular in India. Only thing lacking was proper marketing and fund. An issue potentially could not be solved by infusing only money. We need to think on restructuring the whole structure or may be re-inventing the complete method.

Let’s try to see how IPL can help. Indian Premier League is a event which talks about sports but does not mention Cricket specifically :) . Some of you would have got it right by now!!!!

What if we bring in a system where a franchisee, like KKR or Deccan or Daredevils own a team for that city, they have hockey teams, soccer and cricket team under their umbrella. I guess people would start taking it seriously and who knows we may have a full hose show for the hockey match here. Some point of time we must acknowledge that one of the reasons for the popularity of the cricket match is number of match played and of course professionally organized international matches. "International" is the catch here as we watch the match and start getting into it as it concerns our prestige. IPL followed the same trait where prestige’s of cities are in game...
Why can’t our tycoons / film stars can again show their tempo and metal here ?

Ideas for Go Green initiative. (An Organizational perspective :-) )

1) Paint the office building Green. This would help people think green and innovative.

2) Create some teams in your office and ask them to come up with ideas. Tell them their effort in cost saving (I mean Go Green) would be counted in their annual performance. Now employees can’t blame you for any inconvenience caused by Go Green initiatives.

3) Stop providing water for free. Save water, encourage your employees to drink less.

4) Encourage employees to buy green products like company T Shirts and Briefs from company store and help them spread green.

5) Remove recyclable tea cups and paper rolls from employee canteens and rest rooms and with that saving gift your client a energy efficient HUMVEE.

6) Remove all printers and fax machines from work locations and save tree. You could shift them in your house; printing in your house does not cost a tree.

7) Discontinue the car lease policy and come up with cycle lease policies for employees.

8) Stop CAB shuttle services you used to provide for free. To compensate the inconvenience you may stretch the office timing for another two hours.

9) Replace the tree pots and flowers in your front desk with sustainable and washable plastic

variety. Conserve forest.

10) Create a donation pool from employees and use that money to help them spread green. In this way you can save your money and also get some of your money back, given to employees as salary.

11) Encourage the smokers to quit the bad habit. You buy their precious time.

12) Last but not the least remember, go green is not a head ache, this is an opportunity which would unleash a new era; earning fame and bucks without any hassle.

I would try to discuss the validity of the old notion “Two heads are better than one” and the implication in current business scenario.

Apparently the theory says the rational of coming up with a desired outcome lies in consensus and the more heads involved lesser the deviation. Again the word of caution; we are not talking about the desired outcome or opinion but the proximity of the assumption. A group answering a question or guessing a phenomenon is likely to be closer than an individual addressing the same puzzle. Although we are assuming that we have taken an equally distributed normalized people in the group who do not share common opinion.

There is a parallel theory which talks about conscious first approach. This could also cause a higher yield but if we plot a probability chart then probably the success rate would be 50% in some cases.

So what are we achieving through a group decision? The answer is normalization. This way we are mitigating risk and also directing the decision to achieve the required niche. Of course there is a compromise because of not taking abrupt one sided decisions in some cases which may help maximizing the gain in cases.

Let’s look into the below diagram which would help explaining the today’s management style which uses both the theories simultaneously. (Pics 1)

Let’s explain why most of the companies have opted for this model. In the bottom most layer the employee number is high where as the volume gradually goes down towards the top of the organization. Now we would consider the following cases.
1) Employee with extreme decision making capabilities.
a) Employees with super human capability. (Pics 2)

Here there is high success as the project is outperformed in each and every step and the success is huge. But unfortunately we cannot have so many super humans in the lower ladder as the number of people is more and there is a high probability that the mass is averaged out by people of both extremes.

b) Employees with high chances or error making.
This clearly shows a disaster. (Pics 3)

Now holistically we should take the advantage of the both models where as they show a unique capability to achieve the success. We would try to take the upper ladder highly one sided and the lower layer who can come to a common consensus. The top decision maker would set higher expectation and landmark where as the information or direction would be passed on to the lower levels. The extremely lower levels would be achievers without incurring much of risk and also would not show much upward deviation from the baseline. This way the targets are met.

But unfortunately as per my experience with Vista Home Premiu

m and Ultimate is concern; I am quite unhappy with the system boot up, memory management and responsiveness of the OS. The security features and inbuilt admin tools are great innovation. And also the graphics (aero specially) were ultimate though this is one of the big reason for this version of windows to become a big flop.

After a long long wait the SP2 is released on 25.05.2009.

The download size is approximately 340 MB and with a 1-2 MBPS connectivity it should not take more than 1.5 - 2 hours to download and install

the SP.

SP2 is easy to manage as it comes with bundle o

f Vista sp2 and windows server 2008 sp2. As per my research SP2 would definately help to improve the system performance to some extent. Definately recommended from myside !!

SP2 is a must for those who want to hang around with Vista for some time.. and a must too who want to upgrade from Vista to Windows 7 ... (Business customers with Windows Vista will find that the transition from Windows Vista to Windows 7 will be significantly more straightforward due to the high degree of compatibility between Windows Vista and Windows 7.) ..

There is a recent panic building on the global economic analysts and investors with the falls of many Investment banks in series. More than the fact the rumors are spreading across market especially in brokerage fields. We have seen recent dips in NASDAQ and also NSE, BSE in India. Of course the fact is that the Economy is playing ugly and as the US Banks are declaring bankruptcy but certainly there is no valid reason to put the Stock Market index in red across the globe. This is happening because the short term panic in the market as the market is mainly driven by emotions in short run.

We have to understand one basic point that the market has not collapsed over night and there was significant evidence in year 2007 that the market would go bearish in future, we have seen one of the world’s largest bank Citi under great cyclone. After restructuring itself Citi could not greatly recover its financial crisis till date. It is proved concept that the long term performance of any institute is based on the strategy and the execution of the plans and hence different kind of industries and different countries would not behave in the same manner as the global economy or US crisis.

We have heard various CEO’s talking about transformation in their business models; the services sectors can really utilize the transformation to put the market condition favorable for them. Due to the money crunch in huge investment sector the liquidity flow is hampered and the new investment on R&D would be less and in fact the new startups would face a strong resistance. Unlike the other sector the services sector can turn the condition in their stride, may it be IT services or Pharma or Engineering services division.

Let’s take the focus back on India and how Indian companies are going to behave on this. Indian transformation which briefly started 15 years ago is mainly built on the pillars of services sector. As we have already reiterated that the service sectors could transform the business, Indian Corporate can make the situation favorable for them. The behemoths like US and EU countries are hit with the economy crisis and the only way for them to overcome the crisis is to reduce the expenditure and increase the cost effectiveness across the verticals. With the recent bailout plan the institutes are in huge pressure for performing and fighting for their survivals. The wave has created a new space for Indian IT sector where Indian Companies have bagged some straight outsourcing deal of end to end IT Infrastructure Management. We have to understand that the offshore onsite model is gradually moving towards more cost effective offshore execution schema which means lesser margin for the Indian companies but this exposes a point of improvement for them to achieve more effectiveness.

The global situation is a bit alarming and all the achievers have to play safe as they also have a pressure of keeping their position safe and grow. Indian companies may pose threat to themselves if the growth is inorganic in this phase as the cash crunch could also be felt in near future. Though the trends of overseas acquisition has increases, Indian private firms should again relook their financial sheets as most of the liquids available came from exponential growth in 2005 to 2007 time. In contrast to this the chances of Indian Banking sectors to sustain in respectable stage is high due to an outstanding control of RBI on it.

The way the market would see itself is not profitability but the market capture in terms of long term client commitments thus if the economy bounces back the face value of the business automatically would be inflated. Though the Chinese firms have a little inflexibility as most of the business firms are still strictly controlled by Governments, it has a huge potential to harness the possibilities.

1) Basic Challenges to come up:

Coming up with a simplest idea of initiating even a tiniest thing is infact an arduous challenge to cope up with!

It’s a major hurdle to let your mind speak up and then to let your heart listen to it accordingly. The creation of a tug of war situation between your heart and mind is really difficult to tackle. But coming out unanimously with a synchronized decision is the ultimate paving step of your Aim. There’s a lot of issues to be thought of, and it badly increases if someone is unaware of the following facts:
1) What he is capable of?
2) What he is up to.
3) His Ambition and target.
4) His Current and future Prospects.
4) His length of optimization.

At least he should know, what will give him maximum satisfaction. His current profile or the one which he is choosing to opt for!
At this instance a person may step back with many excuses:
1) Lack of Time.
2) Responsibilities and Dependencies on him.
3) Lack of support.
4) I will think later!!!

Do you think with such a mentality anyone can precede further?? You have the answer. Right!!!

One thing we should always keep in mind, that everything you want can't come together. Sometimes one or the other, you have to either ignore or leave behind at least for the time being. May be with a hope that after you realize your dreams, you can revert back to catch up with those. But obviously it's too bookish to think like that. Time & tide never waits for anyone. That's also true. Hence, ultimately it's all up to you to decide - which one to choose and which stands top in your priority list.

2) Fear of loosing:

Making up your mind for starting up a new venture is never easy, if you are not from a class where business is in blood. You can't just choose blindly like a cookie with the sake of a trial. Its your dream, your passion. You need to invest a lot of money and time on to it. More importantly some of your relationships are also on stake. You have to become a machine.

There's no second chance - either loose or win. Win everything or Loose everything.

But does it give enough reason to pull your leg back? Don't you have confidence in you and all those who love and care about you. Would you spare there blessings and wishes just like that? If the answer is yes, then you are cheating them as well as yourself. The next time you say, "Everything is going to be fine", you will be cheating them, because they dream for your success, achievement, satisfaction and happiness, and if you are not happy, even they can't be.

3) Coming up with the idea:

The next step is to come with the type of business you want to chase :

There can be two broad classifications:
1) Profitable organizations
2) Non profitable organizations

1) Profitable organizations:
These are solely for the purpose of making legal profits viz. starting up a new factory, shop, dealership, educational institutions etc.

Most of these are at high risk. Either this end or that end. It can bring you treasures and at the same time can pull you down to Nil.

2) Non profitable organizations:
These organizations are basically charitable organizations with a sole aim of providing help for the poor and the needy people viz. charitable educational institutions, orphanages, old-age homes etc.

These have a lesser extent of risk. Profit making is never their goal. there main aim is to increase the number of members and money inflow to stand strong and to reach more needy people.

4) Planning your strategies and demands:

Every organization needs proper planning from the grass root level. Its definitely includes all possible pro's and con's (problems & consequences).

The best way is to listen to others. Try one to one communication, internet, books and all sort of like minded ways. This will let you see a better prospect and provide you an ease with planning. The ultimate decision will always be yours. So make sure you analyze everything you listen, and then only you come up with your own.

You can always take others help too to get newer and better ideas, but here also first analyze, think about the pro's and con's and then decide you will implement it or not. Further implement it now or afterwards.

Your initial Planning should at least include the following:
1) Capital - investment
2) Monitory inflow - income
3) Monitory outflow - expenditure
4) Miscellaneous - initial size of the organization and its regulation
5) Profits & loss - Dealing with the profits and Recovery of loss
6) Growth - Ways and prospects

Your further Planning should at least include the following:
1) Expansion - man power, offices, top level executives.
2) Increasing of profits.
3) Marketing.
4) Opening newer scopes.
5) Scope for creative ideas.
6) Catching up the nerve of the market.
7) Aiming for the top.

While planning you always need to be clear and straight forward. Remember vague ideas can hamper your growth.

5) Marketing:

Never ignore marketing. It's must and it should always be proper. Whether yours is a profitable or non profitable organization, it has to get ample of marketing exposure.

Better marketing ensures better monitory inflow and exposure of the company/organization, its achievements and products. It’s very important that people should know about your organization, as it will boost up its reputation further.

There are definitely several other factors and points to be considered, but these are only the basic ones. Obviously it never ends here. It’s only the beginning of a far more extensive world.

If I have forgotten to mention any basic point, which you find equally important or much more important, then I regret. I would definitely look forward for such better ideas, constructive comments and active participation.

SECURE STORE

Brief Introduction:

This application helps in the storage of files in a secure way by providing encryption at different levels which is very difficult to break. It also provides authentication to user with different privileges which helps in dividing the functionalities provided to the user.

Main functionalities

Storage of files.
Different ways to store the files depending on the convenience of the user.
Downloading them to the local system
Previewing the files using different views (e.g. tree view…)
Storing different information like Bank passwords, e-mail passwords etc.
A very user friendly tool to backup and restore the database and also to maintain the versions.
A utility for merging two database of the same type.
A user friendly interface for administrating the users on the system.

Portability

There are different privileges given to the user like Super User, administrator and normal user.
The files are stored depending on the user and hence except for the super user, no other user can view the files stored by a different user
The application will automatically prompt the user for changing the password after 1 month. Everyday it notifies the user of how old the password is.

We all love to race and imagine driving a car faster than any one can. I don’t know how many of us can do it right now but of course we can make our little dragster race like crazy :)

DRAGSTER: -
CO2 Dragsters are miniature cars used for racing and powered by carbon dioxide cartridge. They are used by students to analyze various mechanical and aerodynamics design and effect on moving body. In schools students are often seen competing with one another and improving their car designs.

Things to be considered while designing:-
1. Painting your car will reduce aerodynamic friction.
2. Lubrication of the axels can reduce friction. Use light but effective lubricants. Heavy and greasy lubes may not be a good stuff for lighter moving bodies.
3. The wheel plays a key role here so care must be taken to design the wheel with less ground contact.
4. Avoid unnecessary extensions and ornaments that add weight to your car.
5. The lighter you design your car, the more power will be used out of your CO2 cartridge.
6. Make sure that your drill holes are straight and accurate to reduce extra forces acting on your car.
7. Avoid flat upright surfaces in the front of your car to reduce turbulence.
8. Avoid flat upright surfaces in the back of your car to reduce rear suction.
9. Shield as much air at the bottom of your car to maintain traction.
10. Keep the surface area exposed to oncoming air to a minimum.
11. Place the cartridge parallel to the ground.
12. Axel design is important to reducing friction.

Let's talk about why America is so-far so successful and well admired nation. Undoubtedly it has taught us how the open economy is, what is outsourcing and how to book profit with virtually no hard cash in your hand. This is a critic of the policies recently administered by the country who have outsourced almost everything proudly.

During cold war we have seen sharp discrimination between the policies of two arch rivals USSR and USA. America with moderately open policies and Russia with a close and so called self sufficient market. The rest is history. The aftermath was a sharp inclination of the US farms towards outsourcing jobs and work to achieve better maturity.

Why I have termed this "MATURITY"?

Big giants like HP and IBM scrapped many of their lovely products and started using more competitive products from their competitors and gradually they started calling them partners. This helped them creating an excellent synergy between the organizations minimizing the risk of competition and saving huge cost without compromising the quality. Even several automobile and manufacturing industries started to follow the same trend. They started to assemble rather than invent from the scratch. They have also found out a new way of improving product by simply re engineering or shuffling. An era of out sourcing started.

Last two decade was a maturity period for Banking, Financial systems and IT because we started to believe that the organizations have achieved a certain maturity worth following and they have optimized their operations.

So if we go back another thirty years we could see it started from a closed market and gradually it started showing more openness.

Recently Obama has coined many solutions which have raised the eye brows of many analysts.

One of them is the Tax reforms. The tax reforms (announced Tuesday) have only been proposed and there will be an extended debate on these before they can be implemented, as they require existing laws to be changed, according to software body Nasscom.

This would definitely help US to gain more cash is Govt .fund. The current law in the US states that 'any income that is earned outside the US is not taxed until such time it is brought back into the US.

But for the time being the companies and countries completely dependent on the outsourced work may have some kind of impact. Although there are different views as well.. 'The current proposal, as we understand, is to close corporate tax loopholes for US multinational corporations. We do not believe it has anything to do with IT outsourcing done by US corporations,' India's second-largest IT services provider, Infosys Technologies, said in a statement.

Whatever may be the case, behemoths like HP, Microsoft, Oracle, GM would be majorly impacted. Now we are talking about only American firms!

The answer is simple, they should ask those firms why have you outsourced 80-90 % of your work outside? It may sound great to create a closed supply chain in a country. You tend to keep everything within them. But the supply chain is not complete without the buyer and no doubt US goods have a huge market outside their country. The conservativeness may provoke the buyer countries to take hostile steps also.
Moreover we are talking about a model which we have scrapped 30-40 years back and now we are trying to place it back ???

Those policies may help US to revive their economy in the short term, but special care needs to be administered to see that those do not do any harm in the long run.

The Global Recession Shaping The Organization’s Thirst (AN OBSERVATION)

This was a disaster when the hurricane hit the economic shores of almost all the countries. It has been a great plunge of depression and downturn everywhere. Many of us started comparing the eventful disaster with 2001-2002 crisis and later realized that this time it is not only IT but also finance and manufacturing industries those are majorly hit.

It is obvious, like any other sphere of life the economy also rests on a spinning wheel hence you see both ups and downs. Now the question is all about how much predictable the falls and ups are? Some says the probability of the down fall is although not precisely quantified but every 4-6 years you may see some huge turbulence.

Although there are n numbers of classical approach you could refer and try to identify at least the starting point of this spree and identify the end of it but the fact is that those classical approaches are mere theories.

When we dig too much into a theory created by us or someone we admire we start to believe in it and try to predict and analyze behaviors by using it. If we see any occurrence or instance of any behavior we basically observe some of the outcome or characteristics of the same. Those are mere dots and we connect them. As per our tenacity we try to accumulate as many dots as possible. Then we join them and think that we have found the solution. This re-engineering gives birth to lots of theories which are mere observations. As Steve jobs said the dots could only be joined in past not in the future.

But observations may help us identify the trends. Drowning Lehman Bros and Citi showed that the moment of panic has finally arrived which was a correct projection.

The million dollar question now in our plate is how we know whether the recession is over. More precisely what could be the signs (dots) by which we can see some lights in the horizon.

In the current circumstances companies have taken some major steps for their survival. From lay man's point of view we would see the changes most relevant to us. Like layoffs, salary cuts and lot of perks and facilities vanishing for most of us in our work place showed us where we are heading towards and the reverse of this may show us the other side of economic revival.

I personally feel that this may not be a pure indicator as the cost savings will help companies standardize their business. So now this global turmoil has also showed the companies some ways to streamline their operation and increase their productivity. Earlier productivity could mean a huge bonus for the management and employees now this would surely mean a huge income for the board members. Many of the CEOs and top executives are happy to show the dark side of the economy, they are pretty open to talk about salary cuts and cost savings.

But at last I am sure there would be a hope; things would change for most of the employed class. We should remember that boom of salary and jobs were driven by the huge need of quality talent. I am sure the same talent would drive the things high irrespective of whether the employee is rewarded enough in his organization. Options are always open for them. SO the biggest challenge a company may face in the near future is to maintain enough critical resources and hiring extra-ordinary employees.

But when there is hue that we have overcome the recession, you should know that the news is at least 6 months old :)

Strategies : A probable path for SAP's niche

This post is in succession with my previous post : $7.4 billion deal.

This space is completely dedicated to SAP where I am going to discuss few strategies SAP may take to nullify the hostile environmental affect.

Although the SAP Netweaver stack consists of ABAP and JAVA but the comparative success of Java in SAP space may be commendable but mostly insignificant. This definitely comes as a consolation for most of the think tanks as the migration from Java or reduction of Java in further initiatives would not take huge effort or money.

Now we are talking about SUN Solaris, an age tested probably the fastest OS in server space and no doubt it is still lucrative for SAP to use Solaris platform for their massive ERP instances. Let’s look for some close alternatives to substitute the Solaris effect with equally comparable and stable OS, NO we are not talking about Windows 2003. Any Linux or Unix flavor would give an ultimate real-time performance with comparable runtime statistics, provided it is a server version. Sun Microsystem and HP were SAP's one of the biggest strategic partner with their huge commitments for Open source contribution till date and of course this also motivated SAP to make their DB floating in open space. This makes HP a potential blade server and OS vendor for SAP. With a stable and agile system probably they could unleash new potential for SAP ERP by tweaking their systems for better performance.

Do they have to live without a strong programming language like Java? When it comes to Java, the answer could be YES. Microsoft technology may not be as flexible and widely acceptable as Java but the Windows Company is evolving fast in this space. SAP has already partnership with Microsoft in various development and integration project, like DUET. The ambitious "People Ready" business is nowhere close to SAP and to get a share in ERP market Microsoft has been quite aggressive in this space. There were also speculations that Microsoft may buy out some of the bigger ERP vendor in market and this makes Microsoft a friend of SAP with converging goals.

I am not denying another chance of Merger or Acquisition here ;)

SUN buy out : Obvious but Fitful !

With the recent news of Oracle buying SUN has definitely propelled lot of thought process among concerned community.

As Larry has pointed out that they are trying to provide an end-to-end offering rather than stand alone solutions for their customer, we can also see some obvious advantage Oracle sweeping over IBM and SAP.

Until recently Oracle was mainly concerned about their Database rather than any business application and after its well known venture into ERP and CRM space they started using Java extensively which made them to buy SUN to retain the full control on their product life cycle. The open source Java and its mode of licensing in the future may remain a matter of contention and speculation but definitely this move brings the competitive edge of Solaris and Sun servers to Oracle's pocket. Historically Sun Server and Solaris OS are admired for its performance and dependability.

What I could see is the SAP getting impacted more due to this movement which could also be a deciding or may be a considerable factor behind this buyout where SUN server, Solaris and Java can make any ERP offering more lucrative than its peers. Till date SAP has a huge domination in ERP and CRM area and IBM Microsoft and Oracle are in their process to capture the high end space.

SAP had a paradigm shift a decade ago when they thought of migrating to an integrated platform and promoted Java in their Netweaver engine. ABAP stacks were replaced or moved to maintenance phase in many areas of SAP space. They have also changed their stand towards the use of Oracle Database as the back-end of their R/3 stack. But this acquisition keeps us guessing how they future of Java would be and how this is going to impact the web services and SOWA space or SAP.

No doubt this is a smart move from Oracle investing in a excellent technological firm in right time, the buying price is phenomenally low and all the odds seems to be in Oracle’s favor. But the main point is integration! As the offerings of SUN are totally diverse but still remain in different space from Oracle’s offerings. The integration and success is always a QUESTION MARK for any company. Let the TIME tell its story.

How do we go for a company? How do we analyze if a company is worth working for? The probable answers are.. ‘Heard a good deal about it’, ‘My friend recommends’. Oh yes but what if instead of all positive feedback your first interview with them sucks? That poor note on your mind is a real decider. Whatsoever the credit of that Impression goes to the interviewers!!

So we know how important is a interview process for a company, not only in terms of selecting right resource but also in spreading the brand image of that organization.

There are various and lengthy process and tricks for successful interview taking. I would try to cover some of the important aspects and methods while taking interviews.
Below is the famous interviewing funnel:~

Before taking interview the best practice is to follow a standard practice and master in it thus a unique practice is followed across the organization. Always remember that the interview process for a candidate starts when he enters in to your premises, so be welcoming and make him comfortable. Below are some dos and don’ts.

Some Guidelines:
1) Stick to Roles.

2) Do not interrupt.

3) In case of panel interview do not cross talk.

4) Do not help the Candidate.

5) Select Lead Interviewer.

6) The others listen, take notes, and ask questions on the area which is not covered but relevant.

7) Prepare well and create co-ordination among the interviewers.

8) Follow up at end of the section.

9) Always brief about the length of interview and etc. before you start.

Below are some techniques noted down:Questioning Techniques.

1) Situation.

2) Task.

3) Achievement.

4) Review.

Questioning Pattern:

A complete interview should try to cover most of the below points:

1) Achievement.

2) Personality.

3) Attitude.

4) IQ.

5) Interest.

6) Aptitude. (Technical)

Depending upon the role and job description appropriate stress has to be given on the above points.
Remember the beauty of the interviewing skill lies with the interviewer. He should drive the candidate the way he wants.

All six points’ (Achievement, Personality, Attitude, IQ, Interest, Aptitude (Technical)) needs to be covered and questions should be prepared before the interview starts. For each point questioning pattern should be followed.

The main aim is to see the consistency of the answers through all steps. If any of the answer is not convincing do not leave the candidate or assume that candidate does not know further, it is advised to probe probe and probe further. This would narrow down relevant information which an interviewer wants from the candidate.

While doing the interview using the questioning pattern we should try to find the facts by pointing out the points of Questioning Techniques.

Even if we follow the Questioning Pattern and we see that any of ‘Situations’, ‘Task’, ‘Achievement, ‘Review’ is missing than most probably than not the candidate is not giving correct facts. A strong interview should know that questioning pattern is a flow questioning technique is a tool for validation by which we validate human qualities like ‘Attitude’, ‘Technical Skills’ etc. One should know that emotional quotient is the main driving factor for most of us even if there are some areas where the candidate is not strong enough still if the motivation is right and emotional quotient is correct the candidate may be the best candidate in the world.
Many of us may question why we should follow the above technique.This helps better co-ordination. This technique assures even if the interviewer is taking interview of a candidate with different skill sets still he could be actively involved and take a fantastic interview.

Grading:

Let’s call the execution of a full questioning pattern as a flow. While executing a flow we should see whether we can get all points of questioning techniques in this flow. If answer is yes than candidate should be awarded a highest grade.

For each different areas like ‘Achievement’, ‘Technical skill’, ‘Team Work’ etc one or more flow should be executed.

At the end please remember, that if the interview is not fruitful that we need to ponder and ask ourselves that if we have asked right question!!!

Parallel Movie Industry

Early Morning time: 9:00 AM, first day first show of Movie ‘Hum Saap Ke Bil mein Rehte hain’ (I live in Serpent’s burrow). Mr. Ramalingam Ramesh Muthupati was rushing to make sure that he does not miss the first show. I was waiting till the evening for the review of the movie to come from the dedicated movie buffs. I rang up Mr Ramalingam in the evening to get his comments on the same.
Feedback on the movie was good and also according to Ram the movie was an excellent mixture of comedy and romance!!! Impressive: till I heard the following from him “but the picture quality was not that great”. Surprise!! And then I realized why the picture quality of the FIRST DAY FIRST HOME SHOW was not perfect.
I indeed made sure that my laptop is completely piracy free but I see a point here. It’s a dual movie shooting (mostly) , the camera man in the sets shoots for the first time during the make and the last and final time the First Day First Show people shoots from the Multiplex’s Movie Screen.
I was in argument with myself why should we not discourage pirated movie cd? You are forced to watch all the songs (even if you don’t like to) in the screens where as those CD gives you a flexibility to fast forward the movie, so you save time; by approximately half an hour. You save transport cost, expensive multiplex ticket cost and above all the cost of the special (WARNING: Special in terms of cost only) snacks you buy in those multiplexes. So you save close to 1000 bucks in any big Indian cities per movie per person. Now if we consider time is money you save 30 minutes that means, for average multiplex goers 30 minutes means another 200 Rs.
Adding all those you save 1200 bucksJ. Now you buy a DVD for 30 Rs, you get 4 movies in it which would have cost you a handsome 1200 X 4 = 4800, a hopping savings rite? This was savings per person. If you are watching a movie with your family you just multiply 4800 with number of family members watching and you would get a rough estimate. One of friend also raised an interesting fact when he said, by buying Pirated CD he is contributing towards a parallel industry as big as 2 billion! OHH..
I am not able to decide what was right and what am I loosing by going with Rama’s ploy. I wanted to know what our friends in other part of world has to say about this and then I discovered the below facts.

A lot is sounding around regarding the Green Revolution!! Sounds great as we have a huge spectrum to work on, we may not plant trees but we have varieties of stuffs to do: we can sell carbon, calculate our carbon foot print or use bio fuels, hybrid cars. Although it all started with a try to make the earth a little better place to live but we are catching up with the dogma at a great pace by doing all those we could do. Bio Fuel is one of the initiatives that may not really suffice all of the above needs but definitely would help us save some drops of fossil fuels for our future generations.

If biofuels were taken off from the market, Merrill Lynch estimates oil prices would be 15% higher, which in turn would put further upward pressure on food prices. Indeed there is a huge economic advantage as the oil prices have risen 1000% in the last ten years while corn prices have risen only 200-300%. In 2006, the United States president George W. Bush said in a State of the Union speech that the US is "addicted to oil" and should replace 75% of imported oil by 2025 by alternative sources of energy including biofuels.

No doubt the bio fuels would fuel the growth of alternative energy sector but we should try to analyze the direct effects of it by plotting the graph of "Relative carbon released" Vs. "Economic benefit". The "Relative Carbon Released" would contain the ratio of 'total carbon released' to the atmosphere and 'amount of oxygen released' to the atmosphere during the plants full life cycle and the processing of the fuel (Burning). Certainly this plot would help us identifying the right biofuel for further usage.

Various types of bio fuels are in market as this technology is still nascent and would need to get time tested before it takes up the market. Feedstocks for biodiesel include animal fats, vegetable oils, soy, rapeseed, jatropha, mahua, mustard, flax, sunflower, palm oil, hemp, field pennycress, and algae. Pure biodiesel (B100) is by far the lowest emission diesel fuel. Although liquefied petroleum gas and hydrogen have cleaner combustion, they are used to fuel much less efficient petrol engines and are not as widely available. Biologically produced alcohols, most commonly ethanol, and less commonly propanol and butanol, are produced by the action of microorganisms and enzymes through the fermentation of sugars or starches (easiest), or cellulose (which is more difficult). Biobutanol (also called biogasoline) is often claimed to provide a direct replacement for gasoline, because it can be used directly in a gasoline engine. Ethanol fuel is the most common biofuel worldwide, particularly in Brazil. Alcohol fuels are produced by fermentation of sugars derived from wheat, corn, sugar beets, sugar cane, molasses and any sugar or starch that alcoholic beverages can be made from (like potato and fruit waste, etc.). There are researches going on Algae fuel. Algae fuel, also called oilgae or third generation biofuel, is a biofuel from algae. Algae are low-input, high-yield feedstocks to produce biofuels. It produces 30 times more energy per acre than land crops such as soybeans

Among all the bio fuel sources the Jatropha looks like most suitable candidate in place because ..

a) The hardy Jatropha is resistant to drought and pests, and produces seeds containing up to 40% oil. When the seeds are crushed and processed, the resulting oil can be used in a standard diesel engine, while the residue can also be processed into biomass to power electricity plants.
b) Goldman Sachs recently cited Jatropha curcas as one of the best candidates for future biodiesel production.However, despite its abundance and use as an oil and reclamation plant, none of the Jatropha species have been properly domesticated and, as a result, its productivity is variable, and the long-term impact of its large-scale use on soil quality and the environment is unknown.
c) Jatropha curcas, also known as physic nut, piñoncillo and Habb-El-Melúk, is used to produce the non-edible Jatropha oil, for making candles and soap, and as a feedstock for producing biodiesel.

d) Jatropha plantation has been identified as a most suitable option for the production of bio-fuels utilizing non-edible sources.
e) The plant is extremely drought resistance as its water requirement is extremely low. It can be easily propagated and grows rapidly. Sufficient amount of waste land is available in the State which could be utilized for jatropha cultivation.
f) A single Jatropha seed contains 27% to 31% extractable oil. 10,000 Hectares of jatropha is expected to yield 250,000-300,000 tons of crude jatropha oil per annum. The estimated revenues from 100,000 hectare farm would yield USD 100 mn per annum.
Some facts { Jatropha gossypifolia, also called bellyache bush: its fruits and foliage are toxic to humans and animals. It is a major weed in Australia. }

We have to understand that the bio fuel does not come with side effects. Especially the usage of corn would definitely shoot up the price of the foodstock and there would be a huge gap with global supply and demand of food. For the developing world rural poor who comprise about 67% of those living below a dollar a day, food price increases often increase income as their subsistence farms become economic while for the urban poor food price increases are disastrous. There is no apparent solution to this problem. But we should try to harness more and more wind and solar energy keeping the fact in mind that it is a expensive affair!

Though I have not got many chance to travel many places but fortunately I have been interacting with many people across the globe. The outcome of the sustainable chance was huge; surprisingly I was able to communicate with some of the people who were not that brilliant in English.

This is not all about how convincing your English is, in fact I have seen, you can amaze non native English speaker with the broken English you deliver: because it sounds fast!! But unfortunately this kind of delivery may achieve certain respect from the other side but surely it would create a great crater in the person to person relationship.

We have to understand that the communication is fair when we give our 100% effort in it, with all our hand, face, mind and body. I was reading an article on Customer interaction which says 'Before talking to any Customer first give a smile and then speak'. Sounds ridiculous? How can someone see me or how does it matter, but indeed it makes a difference it makes your welcome sound profound and warm.

I could very easily understand all the non technical terms of most of the people I have spoken to, except some of them. Definitely not all the discredit goes to me, as the communication channel is a pipe and you are just holding one side of it. I had also faced great deal of difficulty understanding my native language speaker. Those all barriers are caused because of our shallow commitment while talking or talking with merely our vocal cord.

I was in Germany when I met an Old Octogenarian and that taught me a lot, a lot about how difficult could be made easy. He tried to introduce himself and greeted and I started in English. Later when I said NAMASTE he could recognize the greetings. We spoke for long indeed for a long time near a mall. He spoke Indira Gandhi and also about how great Mahatma Gandhi was. I cannot tell you whether I was communicating in English or Hindi or any other language but for sure when we grown interest on the topic we started understanding each other it was not all about sound but the deep eyes and the body movement which made a huge difference. What a lovely memoir....

The communication is perfect only when we contribute towards it. We can easily communicate with our family members and friends because we understand their want and behaviour. Same ploy applies in all instances. There was a gentle man who was on call and said, 'My English Little, I ask my friend, He is Big' ... I said 'You speak better and indeed I am not a native speaker' ... we continued without any of his friends help.

The market has seen a constant bull run for last three weeks. BSE and NSE is certainly very low as it have touched almost 2 years lowest mark. BSE is floating below 12K. The chances are that the Sensex and Nifty would touch even lower mark. Last week there was some improvement seen because of the SEBI’s policy restricting FIIs to pullout bulk amount from market.
Those who have bought shares on 13K – 14K Sensex range, can possible pullout their investment if there are any spikes in the market in coming 2 -3 months। But as far as the market trend looks like it can easily touch 10k to 9K points which would be an ideal condition for investment. But it is advisable for all the investors to watch and invest as the money can easily get trapped for 1- 2 years. For long term investors there is no reason for panic.

Answering My Colleague...

Some of my colleagues have asked me how synergy and harmony could be implemented in corporate environment where because of micro management you got to face situations where you have to play a completely conflicting role.

I took some time to understand the question.
These are the frequently faced situations,
1) You are lagging behind your colleagues what to do?
2) Manager has received negative feedback regarding your attitude from one on your colleague whom you have thought to on your stride.
3) Be a team player also make sure you are on top.
4) There are successful colleagues who does not work too hard but apply political nerve.

I did not want to dig too much to discuss the points as those points are themselves a separate topic to discuss on.
I just explained them…

A graduate fresh from the College can become a CEO and a employee with 15 years of experience may still live with his hope to be a Manager. We are known for the metal we are made of with. The metal defines our rules and ethics. Definitely if our moral dies then we too die as an individual.

Having said this I would slightly try to override my thoughts with a different perspective which may sound radical but basically nothing but a little flexibility. We as a corporate employee try to contribute towards our organizations goal and also intern we get satisfaction by either self appreciation or external recognition. When we play different role we are not abruptly changing ourselves but we are making sure that we are playing our role as the time demands.

A CEO may tell his employees that our culture does not lets us fire any employee but in the same time he may initiate a cost reduction process where 4K jobs would be shredded gradually. So what should we think about him? A guy with no transparency in his decisions. Now what we need to understand is the role he is playing at that point of time. We are not here to discuss whether the action was correct or not! But we should understand his situation and obligations. The same points apply to any individual or policies. I may be a manager in the same time I am a colleague and a subordinate of some one. I need to act as the system changes keeping in mind that my organization is benefited and also I get what I deserve. No hard feeling, Nothing too emotional about it

Traffic Jam :: A approach to avoid the same

This is how we can improve the usage of the road via utilizing some of the lanes to move the traffic faster.

The situation in most Indian cities is like the below picture where we do not have dedicated lane. And the roads are one way thus while peak traffic load there is heavy traffic jam in one way and underutilized road in another half.
First of all we should start using the lane as this would keep the vehicles straight and help avoiding useless congestion.

If we can improve the lane management and route the traffic of high load path to the underutilized path by using some of the lanes then the load is almost distributed across.

Thus the predictability of reaching one point to another point is same in respect of time constraint irrespective of whether we start in peak hour towards high traffic area or vice versa.
The mechanism is illustrated below.

Also dedicated lane for bikes and two wheelers would help easing the traffic load as they cause huge traffic jams because of not driving in the lane. Also this would help avoiding the unfortunate road accidents.

I am not a misanthrope; I came to serve the world with a little capability I posses. I am the one destined by the creator to do very little; I can do for the world. I may do I may not; I may not do but still strive for, I may possess but not capable one, I may not have but still live in a dream land. This is my world starts and ends with ME, but I know the sole purpose of me being existent is not only ME but YOU in a bigger meaning.

We do dream, which is required, we should plan which is a must and also we must chase it, which decides our state. But this phenomenon may place us in pinnacle or may land us somewhere; we do not want to see ourselves in. So what happens? Frustration! We quit, quit for the time being and again dream at night, and follow the whole life cycle of conquering our ambition again from scratch. There is no wrong with the above cycle, but what if we quit permanently? We quit for a time frame and then never come out of the state?

We have to understand that we live in a world full of irregularities, and differences. Five fingers in our hand are different, so as we are. Unfortunately some of us, due to improper input or lack of help from peers get embarrassed with our failures and start comparing ourselves with others, and this causes a depression which may also lead to such an extreme that we hate ourselves. Sometimes we kill us!!!

"We hurt ourselves!!!" this definitely could not be taken as a natural tendency.

We may compare us with our peers to grow, and then we touch a horizon and plan for the next; this is life. But have we ever thought that how different are we as an individual? Have we stood in front of the mirror and uttered, how sweet I am, what if the world does not recognizes me, what if I am not so acceptable, but I stand so tall because I am different. Uniqueness does not do any value addition to the society but differences definitely do. Are we interested to know about the friends of Einstein? NO. We are known for what we contribute to this world and that why we are. We are MEANT FOR GIVING OTHERS A WORTH LIFE... ‘SACRIFICE’ HAS A BIG MEANING.

I always felt, if I lose charm in life, if I feel I am not important, still I would make my life worth leaving. There are so many who need me and living in much more deprived condition then me. I would definitely try to console them in whatever way I can and at the day’s end I can rejoice what I have contributed to.

If we are a mere object, we should also follow the cycle every other object does go through. If not useful for someone (May me us in some instance), recycle it thus someone else can use or donate it to the people who could still live with it. Recycling is nothing but transformation in our life and donation is dedication to a particular cause or service.

We should not be so selfish that we envy our peers luck, we should not be so selfish to kill ourselves and not giving others what we could have given otherwise.

Live a life like a saint, enjoy the life as it comes to us. Happiness is not superficial being; it’s a feeling which only a human soul can taste. It does not come from the guts but it is straight from our own heart :)

An Insight : Microfinance

Some people still see micro finance institutes with mere skepticism. They claim that those institutes make more profit than general banks; the fact is true to some extent as in some micro finance institutes the interest rates are much higher than those of normal banks. If we see the micro finance institutes from a different perspective, probably we can do some sort of justification to its working model.
Normally the penetration of general banking system is limited to only those groups or individuals who can afford to take loans, or even they do not require the same but they avail it as part of their financial planning. The left outs are the people who really deserve the money. Considering the fact that banks are too much concerned about the return of the investment they have done and also they have low penetration and high operational cost, it is clear why micro finance model came in the lime light. It has been a long practice of denial of shelling out loans to those who need it.
There is another counter view: government and organizations also provide financial help to the groups who require assistance. But the money is normally assumed to be a gift rather than an amount which should be made to work harder. Distributing assets via micro finance model just does the opposite practice; it imparts a sense of responsibility to the class availing the loan. The socio-economical progress can only happen when people know how to grow and make asset out of the amount they have.
Last thing, there is obviously a possibility that the micro finance institutes can act as the money lenders or brokers which could turn in to a monstrous practice. Government or central banks should keep a close vigil on the practice of that kind.

How providing privilege to children helps the nation.

We all would agree that children are the future of us and budding promise for our nation. We give them trust and promise, help them to realize the coveted goal they crave, and then we get back the responsibility and enthusiasm from them, which would transform the future of our society. We have been continuously talking on social and economic growth, but hardly have we realized that sometimes our back bones are not flexible enough to change the fate of us. Some concerns are understood when we say that we are accustomed with the habitat we are living and mend in the culture we are surrounded with, but there is a small hope on the other side of the corner; we can actually learn from our failures of the past and ensure that we do not repeat the same story with the coming generations.

All of us would love to see a place free from social bigotry, injustice and evils. Have we asked ourselves that how far we are responsible in case we feel we do not exist in an ideal world? Indeed ideal world does not exist. But we can always make our place a little better. We can try to make the peers of our children much empowered thus our children also gets fair competition and healthy friends to rely on. A cause could be emotion driven at the same time it could also mean some responsibility and mutual benefit.

This is the high time we should focus on the overall building of children who needs our help; this is the way we can shape the world, probably the way we want.
