Effective Interviewing Skills

How do we go for a company? How do we analyze if a company is worth working for? The probable answers are.. ‘Heard a good deal about it’, ‘My friend recommends’. Oh yes but what if instead of all positive feedback your first interview with them sucks? That poor note on your mind is a real decider. Whatsoever the credit of that Impression goes to the interviewers!!

So we know how important is a interview process for a company, not only in terms of selecting right resource but also in spreading the brand image of that organization.

There are various and lengthy process and tricks for successful interview taking. I would try to cover some of the important aspects and methods while taking interviews.
Below is the famous interviewing funnel:~

Before taking interview the best practice is to follow a standard practice and master in it thus a unique practice is followed across the organization. Always remember that the interview process for a candidate starts when he enters in to your premises, so be welcoming and make him comfortable. Below are some dos and don’ts.

Some Guidelines:
1) Stick to Roles.

2) Do not interrupt.

3) In case of panel interview do not cross talk.

4) Do not help the Candidate.

5) Select Lead Interviewer.

6) The others listen, take notes, and ask questions on the area which is not covered but relevant.

7) Prepare well and create co-ordination among the interviewers.

8) Follow up at end of the section.

9) Always brief about the length of interview and etc. before you start.

Below are some techniques noted down:Questioning Techniques.

1) Situation.

2) Task.

3) Achievement.

4) Review.

Questioning Pattern:

A complete interview should try to cover most of the below points:

1) Achievement.

2) Personality.

3) Attitude.

4) IQ.

5) Interest.

6) Aptitude. (Technical)

Depending upon the role and job description appropriate stress has to be given on the above points.
Remember the beauty of the interviewing skill lies with the interviewer. He should drive the candidate the way he wants.

All six points’ (Achievement, Personality, Attitude, IQ, Interest, Aptitude (Technical)) needs to be covered and questions should be prepared before the interview starts. For each point questioning pattern should be followed.

The main aim is to see the consistency of the answers through all steps. If any of the answer is not convincing do not leave the candidate or assume that candidate does not know further, it is advised to probe probe and probe further. This would narrow down relevant information which an interviewer wants from the candidate.

While doing the interview using the questioning pattern we should try to find the facts by pointing out the points of Questioning Techniques.

Even if we follow the Questioning Pattern and we see that any of ‘Situations’, ‘Task’, ‘Achievement, ‘Review’ is missing than most probably than not the candidate is not giving correct facts. A strong interview should know that questioning pattern is a flow questioning technique is a tool for validation by which we validate human qualities like ‘Attitude’, ‘Technical Skills’ etc. One should know that emotional quotient is the main driving factor for most of us even if there are some areas where the candidate is not strong enough still if the motivation is right and emotional quotient is correct the candidate may be the best candidate in the world.
Many of us may question why we should follow the above technique.This helps better co-ordination. This technique assures even if the interviewer is taking interview of a candidate with different skill sets still he could be actively involved and take a fantastic interview.

Grading:

Let’s call the execution of a full questioning pattern as a flow. While executing a flow we should see whether we can get all points of questioning techniques in this flow. If answer is yes than candidate should be awarded a highest grade.

For each different areas like ‘Achievement’, ‘Technical skill’, ‘Team Work’ etc one or more flow should be executed.

At the end please remember, that if the interview is not fruitful that we need to ponder and ask ourselves that if we have asked right question!!!

Parallel Movie Industry

Early Morning time: 9:00 AM, first day first show of Movie ‘Hum Saap Ke Bil mein Rehte hain’ (I live in Serpent’s burrow). Mr. Ramalingam Ramesh Muthupati was rushing to make sure that he does not miss the first show. I was waiting till the evening for the review of the movie to come from the dedicated movie buffs. I rang up Mr Ramalingam in the evening to get his comments on the same.
Feedback on the movie was good and also according to Ram the movie was an excellent mixture of comedy and romance!!! Impressive: till I heard the following from him “but the picture quality was not that great”. Surprise!! And then I realized why the picture quality of the FIRST DAY FIRST HOME SHOW was not perfect.
I indeed made sure that my laptop is completely piracy free but I see a point here. It’s a dual movie shooting (mostly) , the camera man in the sets shoots for the first time during the make and the last and final time the First Day First Show people shoots from the Multiplex’s Movie Screen.
I was in argument with myself why should we not discourage pirated movie cd? You are forced to watch all the songs (even if you don’t like to) in the screens where as those CD gives you a flexibility to fast forward the movie, so you save time; by approximately half an hour. You save transport cost, expensive multiplex ticket cost and above all the cost of the special (WARNING: Special in terms of cost only) snacks you buy in those multiplexes. So you save close to 1000 bucks in any big Indian cities per movie per person. Now if we consider time is money you save 30 minutes that means, for average multiplex goers 30 minutes means another 200 Rs.
Adding all those you save 1200 bucksJ. Now you buy a DVD for 30 Rs, you get 4 movies in it which would have cost you a handsome 1200 X 4 = 4800, a hopping savings rite? This was savings per person. If you are watching a movie with your family you just multiply 4800 with number of family members watching and you would get a rough estimate. One of friend also raised an interesting fact when he said, by buying Pirated CD he is contributing towards a parallel industry as big as 2 billion! OHH..
I am not able to decide what was right and what am I loosing by going with Rama’s ploy. I wanted to know what our friends in other part of world has to say about this and then I discovered the below facts.

BIO FUEL: A Critique

A lot is sounding around regarding the Green Revolution!! Sounds great as we have a huge spectrum to work on, we may not plant trees but we have varieties of stuffs to do: we can sell carbon, calculate our carbon foot print or use bio fuels, hybrid cars. Although it all started with a try to make the earth a little better place to live but we are catching up with the dogma at a great pace by doing all those we could do. Bio Fuel is one of the initiatives that may not really suffice all of the above needs but definitely would help us save some drops of fossil fuels for our future generations.

If biofuels were taken off from the market, Merrill Lynch estimates oil prices would be 15% higher, which in turn would put further upward pressure on food prices. Indeed there is a huge economic advantage as the oil prices have risen 1000% in the last ten years while corn prices have risen only 200-300%. In 2006, the United States president George W. Bush said in a State of the Union speech that the US is "addicted to oil" and should replace 75% of imported oil by 2025 by alternative sources of energy including biofuels.

No doubt the bio fuels would fuel the growth of alternative energy sector but we should try to analyze the direct effects of it by plotting the graph of "Relative carbon released" Vs. "Economic benefit". The "Relative Carbon Released" would contain the ratio of 'total carbon released' to the atmosphere and 'amount of oxygen released' to the atmosphere during the plants full life cycle and the processing of the fuel (Burning). Certainly this plot would help us identifying the right biofuel for further usage.

Various types of bio fuels are in market as this technology is still nascent and would need to get time tested before it takes up the market. Feedstocks for biodiesel include animal fats, vegetable oils, soy, rapeseed, jatropha, mahua, mustard, flax, sunflower, palm oil, hemp, field pennycress, and algae. Pure biodiesel (B100) is by far the lowest emission diesel fuel. Although liquefied petroleum gas and hydrogen have cleaner combustion, they are used to fuel much less efficient petrol engines and are not as widely available. Biologically produced alcohols, most commonly ethanol, and less commonly propanol and butanol, are produced by the action of microorganisms and enzymes through the fermentation of sugars or starches (easiest), or cellulose (which is more difficult). Biobutanol (also called biogasoline) is often claimed to provide a direct replacement for gasoline, because it can be used directly in a gasoline engine. Ethanol fuel is the most common biofuel worldwide, particularly in Brazil. Alcohol fuels are produced by fermentation of sugars derived from wheat, corn, sugar beets, sugar cane, molasses and any sugar or starch that alcoholic beverages can be made from (like potato and fruit waste, etc.). There are researches going on Algae fuel. Algae fuel, also called oilgae or third generation biofuel, is a biofuel from algae. Algae are low-input, high-yield feedstocks to produce biofuels. It produces 30 times more energy per acre than land crops such as soybeans

Among all the bio fuel sources the Jatropha looks like most suitable candidate in place because ..

a) The hardy Jatropha is resistant to drought and pests, and produces seeds containing up to 40% oil. When the seeds are crushed and processed, the resulting oil can be used in a standard diesel engine, while the residue can also be processed into biomass to power electricity plants.
b) Goldman Sachs recently cited Jatropha curcas as one of the best candidates for future biodiesel production.However, despite its abundance and use as an oil and reclamation plant, none of the Jatropha species have been properly domesticated and, as a result, its productivity is variable, and the long-term impact of its large-scale use on soil quality and the environment is unknown.
c) Jatropha curcas, also known as physic nut, piñoncillo and Habb-El-Melúk, is used to produce the non-edible Jatropha oil, for making candles and soap, and as a feedstock for producing biodiesel.

d) Jatropha plantation has been identified as a most suitable option for the production of bio-fuels utilizing non-edible sources.
e) The plant is extremely drought resistance as its water requirement is extremely low. It can be easily propagated and grows rapidly. Sufficient amount of waste land is available in the State which could be utilized for jatropha cultivation.
f) A single Jatropha seed contains 27% to 31% extractable oil. 10,000 Hectares of jatropha is expected to yield 250,000-300,000 tons of crude jatropha oil per annum. The estimated revenues from 100,000 hectare farm would yield USD 100 mn per annum.
Some facts { Jatropha gossypifolia, also called bellyache bush: its fruits and foliage are toxic to humans and animals. It is a major weed in Australia. }

We have to understand that the bio fuel does not come with side effects. Especially the usage of corn would definitely shoot up the price of the foodstock and there would be a huge gap with global supply and demand of food. For the developing world rural poor who comprise about 67% of those living below a dollar a day, food price increases often increase income as their subsistence farms become economic while for the urban poor food price increases are disastrous. There is no apparent solution to this problem. But we should try to harness more and more wind and solar energy keeping the fact in mind that it is a expensive affair!

Techniques de communication (Communication techniques)

Though I have not got many chance to travel many places but fortunately I have been interacting with many people across the globe. The outcome of the sustainable chance was huge; surprisingly I was able to communicate with some of the people who were not that brilliant in English.

 

This is not all about how convincing your English is, in fact I have seen, you can amaze non native English speaker with the broken English you deliver: because it sounds fast!! But unfortunately this kind of delivery may achieve certain respect from the other side but surely it would create a great crater in the person to person relationship.

 

We have to understand that the communication is fair when we give our 100% effort in it, with all our hand, face, mind and body. I was reading an article on Customer interaction which says 'Before talking to any Customer first give a smile and then speak'. Sounds ridiculous? How can someone see me or how does it matter, but indeed it makes a difference it makes your welcome sound profound and warm.

 

I could very easily understand all the non technical terms of most of the people I have spoken to, except some of them. Definitely not all the discredit goes to me, as the communication channel is a pipe and you are just holding one side of it. I had also faced great deal of difficulty understanding my native language speaker. Those all barriers are caused because of our shallow commitment while talking or talking with merely our vocal cord.

 

I was in Germany when I met an Old Octogenarian and that taught me a lot, a lot about how difficult could be made easy. He tried to introduce himself and greeted and I started in English. Later when I said NAMASTE he could recognize the greetings. We spoke for long indeed for a long time near a mall. He spoke Indira Gandhi and also about how great Mahatma Gandhi was. I cannot tell you whether I was communicating in English or Hindi or any other language but for sure when we grown interest on the topic we started understanding each other it was not all about sound but the deep eyes and the body movement which made a huge difference. What a lovely memoir....

 

The communication is perfect only when we contribute towards it. We can easily communicate with our family members and friends because we understand their want and behaviour. Same ploy applies in all instances. There was a gentle man who was on call and said, 'My English Little, I ask my friend, He is Big' ... I said 'You speak better and indeed I am not a native speaker' ... we continued without any of his friends help.

The market has seen a constant bull run for last three weeks. BSE and NSE is certainly very low as it have touched almost 2 years lowest mark. BSE is floating below 12K. The chances are that the Sensex and Nifty would touch even lower mark. Last week there was some improvement seen because of the SEBI’s policy restricting FIIs to pullout bulk amount from market.
Those who have bought shares on 13K – 14K Sensex range, can possible pullout their investment if there are any spikes in the market in coming 2 -3 months। But as far as the market trend looks like it can easily touch 10k to 9K points which would be an ideal condition for investment. But it is advisable for all the investors to watch and invest as the money can easily get trapped for 1- 2 years. For long term investors there is no reason for panic.

Answering My Colleague...

Some of my colleagues have asked me how synergy and harmony could be implemented in corporate environment where because of micro management you got to face situations where you have to play a completely conflicting role.

I took some time to understand the question.
These are the frequently faced situations,
1) You are lagging behind your colleagues what to do?
2) Manager has received negative feedback regarding your attitude from one on your colleague whom you have thought to on your stride.
3) Be a team player also make sure you are on top.
4) There are successful colleagues who does not work too hard but apply political nerve.

I did not want to dig too much to discuss the points as those points are themselves a separate topic to discuss on.
I just explained them…

A graduate fresh from the College can become a CEO and a employee with 15 years of experience may still live with his hope to be a Manager. We are known for the metal we are made of with. The metal defines our rules and ethics. Definitely if our moral dies then we too die as an individual.

Having said this I would slightly try to override my thoughts with a different perspective which may sound radical but basically nothing but a little flexibility. We as a corporate employee try to contribute towards our organizations goal and also intern we get satisfaction by either self appreciation or external recognition. When we play different role we are not abruptly changing ourselves but we are making sure that we are playing our role as the time demands.

A CEO may tell his employees that our culture does not lets us fire any employee but in the same time he may initiate a cost reduction process where 4K jobs would be shredded gradually. So what should we think about him? A guy with no transparency in his decisions. Now what we need to understand is the role he is playing at that point of time. We are not here to discuss whether the action was correct or not! But we should understand his situation and obligations. The same points apply to any individual or policies. I may be a manager in the same time I am a colleague and a subordinate of some one. I need to act as the system changes keeping in mind that my organization is benefited and also I get what I deserve. No hard feeling, Nothing too emotional about it

There is a recent panic building on the global economic analysts and investors with the falls of many Investment banks in series. More than the fact the rumors are spreading across market especially in brokerage fields. We have seen recent dips in NASDAQ and also NSE, BSE in India. Of course the fact is that the Economy is playing ugly and as the US Banks are declaring bankruptcy but certainly there is no valid reason to put the Stock Market index in red across the globe. This is happening because the short term panic in the market as the market is mainly driven by emotions in short run.

We have to understand one basic point that the market has not collapsed over night and there was significant evidence in year 2007 that the market would go bearish in future, we have seen one of the world’s largest bank Citi under great cyclone. After restructuring itself Citi could not greatly recover its financial crisis till date. It is proved concept that the long term performance of any institute is based on the strategy and the execution of the plans and hence different kind of industries and different countries would not behave in the same manner as the global economy or US crisis.

We have heard various CEO’s talking about transformation in their business models; the services sectors can really utilize the transformation to put the market condition favorable for them. Due to the money crunch in huge investment sector the liquidity flow is hampered and the new investment on R&D would be less and in fact the new startups would face a strong resistance. Unlike the other sector the services sector can turn the condition in their stride, may it be IT services or Pharma or Engineering services division.

Let’s take the focus back on India and how Indian companies are going to behave on this. Indian transformation which briefly started 15 years ago is mainly built on the pillars of services sector. As we have already reiterated that the service sectors could transform the business, Indian Corporate can make the situation favorable for them. The behemoths like US and EU countries are hit with the economy crisis and the only way for them to overcome the crisis is to reduce the expenditure and increase the cost effectiveness across the verticals. With the recent bailout plan the institutes are in huge pressure for performing and fighting for their survivals. The wave has created a new space for Indian IT sector where Indian Companies have bagged some straight outsourcing deal of end to end IT Infrastructure Management. We have to understand that the offshore onsite model is gradually moving towards more cost effective offshore execution schema which means lesser margin for the Indian companies but this exposes a point of improvement for them to achieve more effectiveness.

The global situation is a bit alarming and all the achievers have to play safe as they also have a pressure of keeping their position safe and grow. Indian companies may pose threat to themselves if the growth is inorganic in this phase as the cash crunch could also be felt in near future. Though the trends of overseas acquisition has increases, Indian private firms should again relook their financial sheets as most of the liquids available came from exponential growth in 2005 to 2007 time. In contrast to this the chances of Indian Banking sectors to sustain in respectable stage is high due to an outstanding control of RBI on it.

The way the market would see itself is not profitability but the market capture in terms of long term client commitments thus if the economy bounces back the face value of the business automatically would be inflated. Though the Chinese firms have a little inflexibility as most of the business firms are still strictly controlled by Governments, it has a huge potential to harness the possibilities.

Traffic Jam :: A approach to avoid the same

This is how we can improve the usage of the road via utilizing some of the lanes to move the traffic faster.

The situation in most Indian cities is like the below picture where we do not have dedicated lane. And the roads are one way thus while peak traffic load there is heavy traffic jam in one way and underutilized road in another half.
First of all we should start using the lane as this would keep the vehicles straight and help avoiding useless congestion.






If we can improve the lane management and route the traffic of high load path to the underutilized path by using some of the lanes then the load is almost distributed across.


Thus the predictability of reaching one point to another point is same in respect of time constraint irrespective of whether we start in peak hour towards high traffic area or vice versa.
The mechanism is illustrated below.









Also dedicated lane for bikes and two wheelers would help easing the traffic load as they cause huge traffic jams because of not driving in the lane. Also this would help avoiding the unfortunate road accidents.

We should dedicate us for holistic cause !!

I am not a misanthrope; I came to serve the world with a little capability I posses. I am the one destined by the creator to do very little; I can do for the world. I may do I may not; I may not do but still strive for, I may possess but not capable one, I may not have but still live in a dream land. This is my world starts and ends with ME, but I know the sole purpose of me being existent is not only ME but YOU in a bigger meaning.

We do dream, which is required, we should plan which is a must and also we must chase it, which decides our state. But this phenomenon may place us in pinnacle or may land us somewhere; we do not want to see ourselves in. So what happens? Frustration! We quit, quit for the time being and again dream at night, and follow the whole life cycle of conquering our ambition again from scratch. There is no wrong with the above cycle, but what if we quit permanently? We quit for a time frame and then never come out of the state?

We have to understand that we live in a world full of irregularities, and differences. Five fingers in our hand are different, so as we are. Unfortunately some of us, due to improper input or lack of help from peers get embarrassed with our failures and start comparing ourselves with others, and this causes a depression which may also lead to such an extreme that we hate ourselves. Sometimes we kill us!!!

"We hurt ourselves!!!" this definitely could not be taken as a natural tendency.

We may compare us with our peers to grow, and then we touch a horizon and plan for the next; this is life. But have we ever thought that how different are we as an individual? Have we stood in front of the mirror and uttered, how sweet I am, what if the world does not recognizes me, what if I am not so acceptable, but I stand so tall because I am different. Uniqueness does not do any value addition to the society but differences definitely do. Are we interested to know about the friends of Einstein? NO. We are known for what we contribute to this world and that why we are. We are MEANT FOR GIVING OTHERS A WORTH LIFE... ‘SACRIFICE’ HAS A BIG MEANING.

I always felt, if I lose charm in life, if I feel I am not important, still I would make my life worth leaving. There are so many who need me and living in much more deprived condition then me. I would definitely try to console them in whatever way I can and at the day’s end I can rejoice what I have contributed to.

If we are a mere object, we should also follow the cycle every other object does go through. If not useful for someone (May me us in some instance), recycle it thus someone else can use or donate it to the people who could still live with it. Recycling is nothing but transformation in our life and donation is dedication to a particular cause or service.

We should not be so selfish that we envy our peers luck, we should not be so selfish to kill ourselves and not giving others what we could have given otherwise.

Live a life like a saint, enjoy the life as it comes to us. Happiness is not superficial being; it’s a feeling which only a human soul can taste. It does not come from the guts but it is straight from our own heart :)

An Insight : Microfinance

Some people still see micro finance institutes with mere skepticism. They claim that those institutes make more profit than general banks; the fact is true to some extent as in some micro finance institutes the interest rates are much higher than those of normal banks. If we see the micro finance institutes from a different perspective, probably we can do some sort of justification to its working model.
Normally the penetration of general banking system is limited to only those groups or individuals who can afford to take loans, or even they do not require the same but they avail it as part of their financial planning. The left outs are the people who really deserve the money. Considering the fact that banks are too much concerned about the return of the investment they have done and also they have low penetration and high operational cost, it is clear why micro finance model came in the lime light. It has been a long practice of denial of shelling out loans to those who need it.
There is another counter view: government and organizations also provide financial help to the groups who require assistance. But the money is normally assumed to be a gift rather than an amount which should be made to work harder. Distributing assets via micro finance model just does the opposite practice; it imparts a sense of responsibility to the class availing the loan. The socio-economical progress can only happen when people know how to grow and make asset out of the amount they have.
Last thing, there is obviously a possibility that the micro finance institutes can act as the money lenders or brokers which could turn in to a monstrous practice. Government or central banks should keep a close vigil on the practice of that kind.

How providing privilege to children helps the nation.

We all would agree that children are the future of us and budding promise for our nation. We give them trust and promise, help them to realize the coveted goal they crave, and then we get back the responsibility and enthusiasm from them, which would transform the future of our society. We have been continuously talking on social and economic growth, but hardly have we realized that sometimes our back bones are not flexible enough to change the fate of us. Some concerns are understood when we say that we are accustomed with the habitat we are living and mend in the culture we are surrounded with, but there is a small hope on the other side of the corner; we can actually learn from our failures of the past and ensure that we do not repeat the same story with the coming generations.

All of us would love to see a place free from social bigotry, injustice and evils. Have we asked ourselves that how far we are responsible in case we feel we do not exist in an ideal world? Indeed ideal world does not exist. But we can always make our place a little better. We can try to make the peers of our children much empowered thus our children also gets fair competition and healthy friends to rely on. A cause could be emotion driven at the same time it could also mean some responsibility and mutual benefit.

This is the high time we should focus on the overall building of children who needs our help; this is the way we can shape the world, probably the way we want.

With reference to the quote regarding India and China's GDP growth rate, I would like to add that, China is ahead with over 10 per cent gross domestic product (GDP) growth rates over the last two decades. Although, China's per capita GDP is now double that of India, both nations had similar numbers as late as 1991.Both the countries brag science and technology, and exports as a basis for their growth. Yet, their strategic paths for economic development are remarkably different. China's strategy is methodical and deliberate, while that of India's is chaotic and opportunistic.
