This is how we can improve the usage of the road via utilizing some of the lanes to move the traffic faster.
The situation in most Indian cities is like the below picture where we do not have dedicated lane. And the roads are one way thus while peak traffic load there is heavy traffic jam in one way and underutilized road in another half.
First of all we should start using the lane as this would keep the vehicles straight and help avoiding useless congestion.
If we can improve the lane management and route the traffic of high load path to the underutilized path by using some of the lanes then the load is almost distributed across.
Thus the predictability of reaching one point to another point is same in respect of time constraint irrespective of whether we start in peak hour towards high traffic area or vice versa.
The mechanism is illustrated below.
Also dedicated lane for bikes and two wheelers would help easing the traffic load as they cause huge traffic jams because of not driving in the lane. Also this would help avoiding the unfortunate road accidents.

Suppose there are 6 lanes such that 1, 2 & 3 is for the traffic moving from point A to B and 4,5,6 for the traffic moving from B to A. Now due to traffic congestion on one way 4 also is employed for traffic moving from A to B. My queries:
1. how would any one know that 4's direction has been changed with an infrastructure like India?
2. The actual roads are usually not this straight cut, there are plenty of diversions and cross connections. It would simply create confusion in that case.
3. There's a shop on the road 4. you planned to take ur usual route to reach there and then u find out it's direction is changed. Will you take it lightly?

Here goes my explanation..
1) In India ... one need not to know ... Do we know which road is goin to get blacked to morrow or dug in between ? ... I hope we all agree Indian Roads are flexible enough ;) ..
2) This is true, the roads in India are not straight cut. As far as the Indian roads are concerned we can not impart a consistency through out in traffic movement becaz of may issues. You have mentioned one of the reasons.What could be done is at least we can address some areas where the road is straighter and not many crossings are there. No doubt the bottleneck in some junctions would be a issue. But as Isaid unless and untill we create a consistent lane system we can not address all the issues.
3) Yes in India we sometimes drive in extreme right where as we have to stop in next left. This is a wrong notion. Like the other developed nations we should try to get accustomed with the lane system. Like if we are driving in the left and we should stop in the next stop we should change the lane to the left most one. Because in the idea proposed in my blog the let most lane for the driver is unaffected. So one there should not be an issue.
hey joydip, it's good idea and i appreciate your way of thinking on reusability.
But whatever the ideas that we coin, in solving any of these kinds of problem, I seriously think that we need some real good education. It's not the education on engineering, maths or some academic subjects. It's about common sense, civic sense and how to be courteous while on road. It's also the people who need to change, not only the ideas.
